I often apply a dozen or more layers of color in many of my colored pencil pieces to achieve the depth that I want.  This technique is quite different in that I use only one color- white.  If the value is dark, that is where there are few or no layers of white, and more of the black board is revealed.  It's a bit like thinking backwards, as if drawing a photo negative.
